What are lipomas?
Lipomas are common fatty lumps of non-cancerous tissue that can be found anywhere in the body, including the shoulders, chest, arms, back or neck. They tend to affect older adults at a rate of about 1 in 100. While initially lipomas may cause alarm, they are usually benign and most are removed more for aesthetic reasons than for medical ones. However, lipomas may also sometimes present functional obstacles, such as when they inhibit motion or put pressure on surrounding organs or nerves.
Lipomas are usually diagnosed by feel - they are mushy and non-tender to the touch and move around - but they can also be detected through an MRI, CT scan or ultrasound. Tissue biopsies may also be used to examine lipomas.
Risk factors for lipomas include
- Being middle-aged, usually between 40 and 60
- Having a family history of lipomas
- Having a family history of liposarcoma (a rare cancer of the fat cells)
- Having Cowden or Gardner's syndrome
What does lipoma treatment entail?
Lipoma surgery is performed under general or local anesthesia and takes up to two hours. These rubbery bumps are treated through excision by removing the fatty cells beneath the skin. The tiny incisions made are typically closed with microscopic sutures that leave imperceptible scarring. Once the mass has been removed, the doctor will send it to be double-checked at the laboratory in order to rule out liposarcoma, a rare form of cancer. When excision is not appropriate, lipomas can be removed through steroid injections or computer-assisted liposuction.

After lipoma treatment, the affected area should be kept clean, dry and free from makeup, shaving or restrictive clothing/accessories. Any redness, bleeding or discomfort should subside within a day.
