Breast Reduction Find relief from large breasts

What is a breast reduction?

While the majority of women seek out cosmetic breast surgery to restore depleted volume and fullness to the chest, there are those who experience the opposite problem - an overabundance of breast tissue - and they may not even be aware there is a solution to their troubles. Overly large, pendulous breasts that are disproportionate to the rest of the body can not only cause self-consciousness from an aesthetic standpoint, they can also be a source of significant physical discomfort, including pain in the shoulders, neck and back, chafing from bra straps, rashes and skin irritation. Normal activities like playing sports or attending to children can become fraught with difficulty, further adding to one's burden.

Breast reduction, also called reduction mammoplasty, can achieve profound, life-changing results, removing excess fat, tissue and skin in the chest for a more attractive and functional physique. After a breast reduction, clothes may fit better, moving around becomes more enjoyable, and debilitating stress is alleviated.

An ideal candidate for breast reduction...

  • is at a healthy weight
  • is physically and psychologically stable
  • has reasonable expectations for improvement rather than perfection
  • is a non-smoker
  • suffers from heavy, low-hanging breasts
  • has nipples that dip below the breast crease
  • has enlarged areolas from breast stretching

Setting up your complimentary consultation

The first step in undergoing a breast reduction is to meet directly with Dr. Lahijani in the privacy of his office. For your convenience, he sees patients in Beverly Hills, Valencia or Palmdale. During your session, the doctor will examine your breasts, review your medical records, order any necessary tests, and discuss goals and strategies for your results. 3D imaging along with before and after photos can help ensure that physician and patient expectations are accurately aligned. Most clients feel a sense of excitement and relief after their consultation, as Dr. Lahijani is known to set even the most anxious patients quickly at ease by addressing all their concerns in detail.

Surgical approach

Breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia at Dr. Lahijani's in-house surgical suite, an AAAASF-accredited facility in the heart of Beverly Hills. The treatment takes approximately 1-4 hours. During surgery, the doctor will excise the bulk of fat and skin from the breasts, elevate the nipples, and perform any necessary additional contouring. Afterwards, the doctor will affix drainage tubes to help irrigate fluids and blood. A support garment will then be provided to combat swelling as the breasts heal.

Which incisions are used?

  • Periareolar - In this instance, the incision is hidden in the lower pigmented crescent of the areola, minimizing future scarring.
  • Lollipop - Also called a 'keyhole' incision, this technique includes a circular areolar incision that is then traced downwards towards the breast crease.
  • Anchor - An anchor incision is created by fashioning a periareolar crescent, followed by a vertical line down the breast and a horizontal line across the breast crease, mimicking the shape of an upside-down T. This is the most common approach, as it provides the surgeon the greatest access and precision.

What can I expect from my recovery?

Recovery typically takes 2-4 weeks, depending on the complexity of your surgery and on the rate at which your body heals. Discomfort, swelling or pain can be address through medications prescribed by the doctor. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should not be undertaken for at least six weeks, as this may compromise your results. Dr. Lahijani will supply you with a comprehensive aftercare plan detailing instructions for bathing, wound care, sleeping and returning to work. If any concerns arise, do not hesitate to reach out to Dr. Lahijani night or day. Excellent care does not end once you leave our offices.

How long will my results last?

Breast reduction is considered a permanent procedure, however the natural effects of aging and gravity can change the breast shape over time, so it's important to follow up with your doctor to ensure your continued satisfaction with your results. Excessive muscle gain, weight loss or weight gain may also affect your outcome down the line.
